New York City police say that there have been “several fatalities and numerous injuries” from an incident in which a vehicle struck multiple people on a path in lower Manhattan.
One individual has been taken into custody.
Police said that a vehicle entered a bike and jogging path a few blocks north of Chambers Street, striking multiple people.
The vehicle continued south and hit another vehicle, after which the suspect exited, displaying imitation firearms. The suspect was then shot by police, the NYPD said, before being taken into custody.
The New York Police Department said on Twitter that the investigation was ongoing. Earlier they reported police activity near Chambers and West Street in Manhattan.
Civilians arriving at the scene early on described a damaged truck that had crashed into the sidewalk and bodies lying on the ground.
Ezequiel González, 18, was walking to Stuyvesant High School on Chambers Street where he works as an assistant speech coach. He said the school has been closed with people unable to enter or leave as the police cordoned off the area. “It’s pretty scary. I know people in there,” he said.
The office of New York City mayor Bill de Blasio said the mayor was “en route to the scene of the incident in lower Manhattan.”
